Impress Anyone You Meet with These Tips

May 28, 2015 by Zack Duncan Leave a Comment

There are many studies that say success and wealth don’t come from your skills or knowledge, but rather how you are able to connect with other people. When you meet someone for the first time, they almost instantly decide if they respect you, like you, and/or trust you. No matter what you are trying to do; get a job, leading an organization, or trying to score a hot date… It all rides on that first impression. This is scary to think about, but if you are smart enough to turn it into a positive thing, then the world can be yours with little effort. Let’s learn how to make a good impression on people and make your life a little better in all aspects.

1.) Feel Safe and Don’t Be Threatening

When you meet someone for the first time, you are both driven by instinct. Most people don’t even think about it, but their body language shows how safe and secure they feel. Keep this in mind, and think about how you are coming off in general. Don’t give the other person any reason to ever feel like you even know how to be threatening.

2.) Have Boundaries and Respect Personal Space

Always respect the bubble. Everyone is a little bit different when it comes to person space. Some people require more, and some people expect less. If you are in doubt, just pay attention to the other person and follow their lead. If they are backing off a little bit, then do the same. If they are leaning in and being super friendly, give it right back to them.

3.) Be What They Expect

In the professional world, first impressions are everything, and are always fueled by expectations. When you meet someone for the first time, they already have an idea of who you are and your entire image before they see you based on emails, texts and phone calls. Your job is to not let them down on that expectation. You already talked the talk, now walk the walk. Dress well, look good, be confident and be excited.

4.) Be Aware of Body Language

With body language, we almost say more than we ever could with words. Make sure you carry yourself in a way that commands respect. Have facial expressions that are approachable, but also say that you are in control and comfortable. Always remember to make eye contact as well.

5.) Always Be Positive

Whenever you are explaining something, even if it is something negative, always find a way to make it positive. Negatives do not translate well into brain-friendly imagery. Make sure you are mindful of having a positive way of explaining anything.

6.) Never Have A Bad Attitude

People are like magnets that are attracted to other people on the same wavelength. If you give off a positive energy and vibe, those are the type of people that you are going to attract. Even if you are feeling the heat of a specific situation, always project calm positivity.

7.) Keep Your Moods in Check

You’re mad? No one cares. You’re arrogant? No one wants to listen to you. Whatever is going on in your life, always project warmth and confidence. That is how you impress people, and that is how you lead.

8.) Synchronize

Make sure the tone of your voice, the words you are saying, and your body language are all saying the same thing. Mixed signals make people feel weird.

9.) Always Be Interested

Even if you don’t care, it will benefit you to pretend to be interested and open minded. If you can get people talking, and keep them talking by acting interested, they will be drawn to you. Ask questions and spark good conversations.

10.) Look Good

Make sure your style represents what you are all about and gets your message across. If you look good, then people already respect you before they even have a chance to meet or interact with you. And you can’t talk a big game and not look the part… that just doesn’t work. I would say that image is a good 70% of the battle.

A few more things you can do that will help you out: Always treat every connection you make like it is the most important thing you have ever done in your life. And also, nothing in the world beats a firm handshake. When I was a kid, my father always told me tat when I meet someone new and important, try to break their hand. It has been working pretty well so far. Dad always knows best.
